Background Story

PT. United Tractors sells heavy equipment and also offers after-sales support by monitoring how efficiently the equipment is used. This includes tracking operating time, fuel consumption, and analyzing performance based on function and location.


To improve this process, they wanted to develop a mobile app for field surveyors to conduct time motion studies. The app helps track how long each unit takes to complete specific tasks.

As the first step, we interviewed users to understand their current processes, challenges, and how our product could improve their workflow.

A : By using a stopwatch, then writing down the results of time monitoring on the monitoring form.

A : First, find out the task the unit wants to carry out, then memorize the sequence of movements when carrying out the task.

A : The time calculation continues, but later notes will be added as to what problems there were when carrying out the movement.

We then created two user personas to represent the types of users who will use this application : the field surveyor, who will conduct the time motion study, and the section head, who will review and manage the results of the time motion study for the heavy equipment.

After we get all the information, we try to assemble the information to define the problem that occurs to the user, how it should work, and then form it into a set of solutions that we will implement into an android mobile application product.

Problem Statement

Surveyors often get distracted during motion studies because they have to switch between observing the unit in the field and recording movements on the assessment form. They also struggle to memorize the sequence of movements, leading to errors in timing. On top of that, they must process raw data into a report, adding to their workload.

How Might We?

  • How might we make the surveyor's focus in calculating time not be easily distracted?

  • How might we process data from time calculations into reports that are ready to be presented?

Solutions

  • Unit Movement Set :

    Users only need to select a work category with movement sequence rules already in it, so users don't need to memorize the sequence anymore.

  • Start n Stop :

    Counting with a stopwatch-like system with start and stop counting actions so that users can focus on monitoring the unit without having to look for a long time at the device screen.

  • Informative Reports and Charts :

    The time calculation results will be immediately processed using a certain calculation formula to produce a report on the time and fuel efficiency required by the unit.

  • Downloadable Calculation Reports :

    Calculation results and reports can easily be downloaded to facilitate sharing between users and devices.
